1-Where do you reside and create? County Wicklow, Ireland.
2-Did you study art or is it inherent? Never studied art. I would have liked to, but I didn’t do very well in school.
3-How would you describe Alan Doyle? Blue eyed, left handed, hemophiliac, dyslexic.
4-Is there any reality behind the characters in your paintings or are they purely fantasy? They are me and they are other people. All people. Sexless and all sex. No fantasy.
5-What do you dream about? If I can remember them, random things and people, banal things, strange things.
6-If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table? I have no idea. I like to eat in a hole in the ground in my garden, the food gets everywhere. There is a fox that sometimes appears and I like its company.
7-What are your guilty pleasures? I don’t really know what guilty pleasures are. I like to smoke.
8-What artist working today you most admire? Another one I can’t really answer. There are a lot of artists that I admire. I like the work of sebastian helling, nick blinko, rob ober, huma bhabha. The list is too long. I like a lot of photographers too.
9-Do you consider yourself a pop artist? No.
10-What is the last great movie you watched? I watch a lot of movies. Some good some bad. I enjoyed the remake of Suspiria recently. The films of Jeff keen and Stan brakhage are great, and Paul mcCarthy of course.
11-If you had access to a working time machine what period would you choose to live in? To live in? I might visit another time but I don’t think I would want to live in another time than now. It would be great to go back and see Captain Beefheart and the magic band in the ‘Lick My Decals Off Baby’ era.
12-In your professional carrier, what is the longest you have gone without creating? Probably a couple of months.
13-What is the source of inspiration for you? A buzzing in the skull. a flutter in the guts.
14-If you hosted a TV talk show, we will call it, The Alan Doyle hour, who would be your first guest? A basking shark. They seem like they would be a good laugh. Or Rolf Dieter Brinkmann.
15-What is the most extravagant thing you have done? Bought a house or vegan Magnum, they’re pretty extravagant.
16-Are you an optimist, pessimist or realist? All three, throughout the day.
17-What scares you the most? Being dropped in the middle of the ocean or spontaneous combustion.
18-What emotion do you expect to be on people’s faces when they look at your art? Openness.
19-What question would you ask if you were the interviewer? What’s with all the self doubt.
