Interview by Jimon
-Where were you born and where do you currently live and create? I was born in the suburbs of Philadelphia, grew up in the Pittsburgh area currently live and create in NYC.
-How would you describe Sabeena Jindal? An extrovert and introvert at the same time. I think, bit of a nerd since I studied engineering. I hate to gossip but I’ll keep your secret. I definitely have an obsessive streak in that when something fascinates me I’ll be thinking about it constantly even in my sleep until I finish it or if I watch a great movie I’ll be thinking about it in my head over and over and maybe watch it a few times and then go online and read about it and talk to other people about it etc. It kind of consumes me for a while.
-What was your first experience with art as a kid? Drawing images of Hindu gods and goddesses.
-Your work consists of stencil, collage and paint. How did this start? By experimenting. I love layers and so this technique allows me to use layers upon layers to create complex rich pieces of art. Also growing up I spent many summers in India and was fascinated and inspired by the rich colors and the orderly chaos of all the people, animals, vehicles, building all ancient and modern all co-existing to create a beautiful palette. I bring this same energy and orderly chaos to my canvas as well.
-Your pieces seem to be time consuming. What is the longest you have spent on a piece?I spent two months on my Wonder Woman piece which has over 300 layers in it.
-Have you ever come across a piece of art that you could not or did not want to stop looking at? I feel like I am constantly seeing art through my mind’s eye even when I am not physically looking at art and naturally the most memorable art I picture in my mind over and over again but at present there isn’t only one piece of art that stays at the forefront of my mind. I guess I have yet to see that artwork.
-What was the First job you ever held?I was a clerk bagging customers’ groceries. I remember having sore arms when dog food went on sale!
-If you had to watch one movie on repeat for eternity, what would it be? What an awful situation. I love variety but if I had to I think all the Star Wars movies.
-Where/when do you get most inspired? In nature, hiking through trails, scenic overlooks, starry skies, looming mountain peaks, gorgeous gorges, mysterious canyons, secluded brooks and wading through shallow streams.
-First thing you think/do in the morning and Last thing at night? First thing in the morning is to check my social media and last thing at night. I think about art I want to make, subjects and themes I want to explore.
-What is your least favorite part of the day? Getting up to an alarm.
-If you weren’t an artist, what would you have liked to be?If you think about it everyone is an artist in whatever occupation or field they choose whether it’s science, medicine, technology or writer. I would like to think I would be a creator no matter the field.
-If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table?Warhol, Basquiat, Frida Kahlo.
